Fish production is a key sector of the food industry both globally and in Azerbaijan. This sector is developing in two main directions: natural fishing and pond fish farming. Pond fish farming involves raising fish in specially designated water reservoirs, offering a more sustainable and environmentally friendly approach. More than 50% of global fish production is carried out using this method.
In Azerbaijan, fish production occurs through natural fishing in the Caspian Sea and inland water basins, as well as through aquaculture in artificial lakes and fish farms. The Salyan district is one of Azerbaijan’s largest fishing regions, where fish farms have been operating for many years, playing a crucial role in the district’s economy. Fishing in Salyan primarily consists of pond fish farming. Various fish species are raised in these farms, and fishing takes place during specific seasons each year.
Salyan Agropark has successfully implemented numerous projects in fish farming and production. Eight ponds have been established, covering nearly 100 hectares, specifically designated for pond fish farming. Currently, approximately 60 tons of commercial fish are produced on 79 hectares of land, while an additional 30 hectares are used for breeding juvenile fish. Compared to the previous year, fish production has increased by 50% this year.
Vidadi Heybatov, a member of the Azerbaijan Fishermen’s Union, fish scientist, ichthyologist, and farmer, emphasized that the success of fish farms depends on several key factors, including water quality, feeding, environmental conditions, genetics, and market demand. He highlighted the importance of fish production, noting that fish are rich in protein, Omega-3, and essential vitamins.
The fishing industry provides employment for thousands of people. Additionally, aquaculture helps conserve fish populations and preserve natural resources. Fish products are in high demand in the global market.
Looking ahead, the establishment of more artificial fish farms, the implementation of environmentally sustainable fish production methods, the expansion of export markets, and the production of high-quality fish products will be key drivers of the industry’s rapid growth. Fish production is a vital and promising sector, contributing to economic growth, environmental sustainability, and healthy nutrition.
